Sex, Violence, and Boxing Cats

The Edison Manufacturing Company started producing films for their Kinetoscope viewer in the 1890s.  If you walked into a nickelodeon at the turn of the century (1900) with some buffalo nickels burning a hole in your pocket, what would you spend them on?

Thanks to the Library Congress and YouTube, we can consider our options.  On the LoC channel you can find lots of interesting early films.  I highly recommend checking it out.

As promised…

Sex

For the ladies, the Amazing Sandow:

For the gents, some daring ankles:

Violence

Boxing Cats

Things really haven’t changed in the American film industry.  Extra credit to the first person in the comments who can explain why boxing was so popular a subject in early cinema.  It’s not just because people liked it.
